Foxy Fives and First Test
9/28/2018
This week, my sixth grade honors students engaged in an activity called Foxy Fives. In this activity, students are given 5 numbers and a "total". They must use all five numbers and any operations to obtain the "total". This is a really fun and engaging activity that reviews order of operations. If you enjoyed Foxy Fives, you should look up the game "24".
My seventh graders are preparing for their first test which will be given on Monday. This test will cover everything in Comparing and Scaling. They had the chance to take a book home this weekend to study and they were given a list of review topics with problems that matched each topic. I have no doubt that everyone will do very well on the test. My sixth grade students continued to explore prime factorizations this week and began to discuss what makes even numbers even and what makes odd numbers odd. We will be jumping into operations next week as we explore Foxy Fives as well. MathXL and Math Munch

Happy Monday everyone! While MathXL is business as usual, we are starting a new set of Math Munchies. I am so excited for the new explorations I have planned for this upcoming month. To start things off on a light note, I have selected a game: Ray Ray. The goal this week is to see if you can find the pattern that predicts which Ray Rays will sit and stand. Share this game with anyone who is interested and be prepared to report back to me on Friday. Here are your links for the week:

Seventh graders took a partner quiz on Tuesday. The results were mixed and some of you might find that it is one of your lower quiz scores (granted we only have two quiz scores in the grade book at this point). Don't worry about the impact it has on your grade. There are so few assignments at this point in the trimester that every point will make your grade fluctuate drastically. Just relax and know that you will have the opportunity to replace your lowest quiz score after the test. The comparing and scaling test is approaching in a couple weeks. Sixth graders continued to apply their knowledge of factors and multiples in a set of word problems. The honors students took their first partner quiz today. The results are fantastic. Great job and get ready for factor strings next week. The students in Math 6 will be taking the partner quiz next Monday (9/24). Make sure you know who you will be working with. MathXL and Math Munch

This week, MathXL will be business and usual (10-15 skills practice problems), but Math Munch will look a little different. This is the last Math Munch in the cycle (4 weeks). You are getting a problem to take home, but I am also posting it below. As with every Math Munch, it is not about the end result as much as it is about the process. That said, you will be submitting two things for Math Munch this Friday, your solution to the problem and the Math Munch paper with all 4 weeks of Math Munch completed. If you do not get an actual answer, still submit the problem with the work you completed. I give more points for the process than I do for the answer.
You will find the links for MathXL and the problems below: Click here for MathXL Click here for regular 6th grade Math Munch Click here for honors 6th grade Math Munch Click here for 7th grade enriched Math Munch Math 6: This week in Math 6 we expanded on our understanding of factors and multiples and learned about GCF (greatest common factor) and LCM (least common multiple). In this section, you might notice that each day is a new word problem to explore and it is up to you to decide how you apply your understanding of factors and multiples. This theme will continue into next week. I have tentatively scheduled a quiz for next Friday, but chances are it will take place the following week to allow for additional time to process and understand.
Math 6 Honors: This week we dove head first into a challenging problem: The Locker Problem. This is actually a very famous math problem that reveals very important characteristics of numbers. As we have been exploring factors and multiples, you might be thinking that this is an awful lot of review from last year. However, as you saw with The Locker Problem, factors and multiples enable us to understand numbers and how they work on a much deeper level. As we continue into next week, we will further explore common factors and common multiples with word problems as our vehicle. We will end the week with a quiz on Friday. Math 7 Enriched: This week we continued to explore ratios and proportions. Towards the end of the week, we started using rate tables and graphs to analyze proportional relationships even further. Next week, we will take a partner quiz on Tuesday. MathXL and Math Munch

Here are your links for MathXL and Math Munch this week. We will not have a quiz this week, but all classes will most likely have one at the start of next week.

Happy Friday! I had such a great time meeting everyone who came to Back to School Night last night. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedules to invest in your child's education.
In my sixth grade classes, we had the first quiz and we reviewed the results today in class. The students learned about my "highlight grading" technique. Please let me know if you have any further questions about this strategy. I am happy to share with you my reasons behind "highlight grading". The scores are in Q, so make sure you take the time to review your grades. In the seventh grade, we took the first quiz today and you will receive the results on Tuesday... although, I do have to tell you, I am VERY happy with the results! Next week all classes will move on to investigation 2 in their respective texts. Have a wonderful weekend!!! MathXL and Math Munch

Here are your links to the homework this week:
You should have a copy of the Math Munch assignment, but I thought I would post the links just in case you want to explore further. Remember that both assignments are due on Friday. This is going to be a busy week! We have a quiz and Back to School Night scheduled for this Thursday. |
