Instead, you will explore the math munch activity assigned and then I will have a way for you to report back on Friday at the start of class. If you know that you will be absent on Friday, please check in with me. This week you will read an article and pick one thing to explore a little further: CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE. You can explore at least one of the three topics: Havel Hakimi (game), Temari (art), or Math GIFS. SEVENTH GRADE MATH MUNCH: This weeks Math Munch is your choice of a game. Please visit the Math Munch website and select a game that interests you THAT YOU HAVE NOT EXPLORED YET. The prompts are on your Math Munch paper. MathXL and Math Munch

This week was a really productive week for all classes. The seventh grade enriched class learned how to multiply and divide rational numbers and took the quiz on this skill on Thursday. I would like to wrap up Accentuate the Negative next week so that we can take our final unit test before Thanksgiving break. This might mean that I skip a couple of the last sections and omit them from the test. Investigation 4 is a fantastic section that covers two very important math skills, so it is short but critical. I would rather teach these skills and give you time to let them soak in before I test you on them. That said, we are looking at doing order of operations on Monday, review on Tuesday/Wednesday, and test on Thursday/Friday.
In sixth grade honors, we spent a good portion of the week learning how to compare fractions. This skill will be critical in building the fraction sense. We also learned about absolute value and opposites. In the sixth grade classes, we spent the entire week learning about unit rate. Starting on Monday, we talked about how we could possibly share different sized gummy worms fairly between different groups of people. We continued this problem throughout the week and figured out that the question of "how much does each person get" is finding the unit rate. In order to find the unit rate, you really just divide the two values. For instance, $24 for 6 sandwiches means that you paid $4 for each sandwich. Obviously, the numbers don't always divide evenly which makes some unit rates harder to find than other. This is a concept that we will continue to work on next week as it is a great way to reason with a huge variety of problems. MathXL and Math Munch

Click here to work on MathXL You will have two options for Math Munch this week. You do not have to do both. Select one of the options below and respond to the prompts on your Math Munch paper. This week, the theme is "Video". For each video, write two questions that you still have on the topic. Option 1: Domino Computer Challenge. Just a short video on a domino challenge. If you like it, you should explore domino challenges further. Option 2: First Past the Post Voting. In light of elections this week, this is a fun video on the mathematics behind the two-party system, Watch as the animal kingdom votes for a president of the jungle. This week in Math 7 Enriched, we continued adding and subtracting rational numbers and ended the week with a quiz. You will get the results next week. If you want to continue practicing at home, playing Salute with your family is a fantastic way to do so. Next week, we will be moving on to multiplying and dividing rational numbers.
In Math 6 Honors, we solved some problems involving gummy worms and discussed how this relates to finding the unit rate. We also extended our exploration of proportional reasoning to rate tables. Rate tables are a fantastic tool for analyzing ratios and rates. We are ending the week with a quiz and will dive right into investigation 3 next week. In Math 6, we wrapped up the first investigation of Comparing Bits and Pieces by working with tape diagrams. Tape diagrams can be used to solve all kinds of math problems. They provide a fantastic visual for analyzing any problem that involves proportional reasoning, so you are going to see these pop up a lot this year. We are ending the week with a partner quiz and will dive into the gummy worm exploration on Monday. Have a fantastic weekend everyone! |
