This week in 7th grade, we reviewed the results of the Shapes and Designs quiz. Fantastic job by the way! A few of you will need to retake, and this will be the one type of quiz that you are allowed to retake since it is the end-of-unit assessment as opposed to a checkpoint. I highly recommend that any Comparing and Scaling or Shapes and Designs retakes happen in the next couple of weeks. Do not wait until the last minute! We also started a new book: Accentuate the Negative. In the early sections, we extended our understanding of the number line to include rational numbers (much of this was review from 6th grade) and learned how to add integers. Today, we played Salute! in class in order to practice our new skills. I highly recommend playing at home with someone if you want to continue to strengthen your number sense.
In 6th grade honors, we breezed through investigation 1 of Comparing Bits and Pieces and took the partner quiz today. Next week we will continue our work on fractions when we "share gummy worms". In 6th grade math, we really zeroed in on how to make fraction strips and how to use them to write equivalent fractions. The partner quiz that wraps up this investigation will likely take place next Thursday or Friday. MathXL and Math Munch

Click here to work on MathXL This week's Math Munch is a video on doodling in math class by our favorite mathematician Vihart. Remember, the video dives into high school level math, so don't feel like you have to understand everything she talks about. However, it's a cool mathematical way to doodle and it exposes you to some pretty cool math ideas. Enjoy! Click here to work on Math Munch MathXL and Math Munch

Click here to work on MathXL Math Munch this week is a video on how to use a computer program to create recursive drawings. As you might have noticed, each Math Munch takes on a different theme. Some you will enjoy more than others, and I think my artistic students will find this one pretty cool. Try creating your own recursive drawing... I found it pretty difficult, but if you haven't already figured out, I am not very artistic at all. Try playing around with it: Click here to visit the recursive drawing website This was a busy week! To start, progress reports came home. Please keep in my that this is merely a snapshot of how you are doing at this point in time. If you are unhappy with your grade, there is plenty of time to work on improving before trimester grades go out. Please get in touch with me about completing missing assignments if you need to.
In my 6th grade classes, we continued to work on order of operations by completing Foxy Fives. We then extended this understanding to work on interpreting word problems. We are nearing the end of this unit and are looking to take the Prime Time test sometime within the next couple weeks. I will be dedicating next week to review lessons to see where we still need practice. I'm aiming for a test date Thursday, October 11, but that will depend on how much practice we need. In my 6th grade honors classes, we spent the week discussing properties of numbers and we are officially ready for test time. We will start reviewing for the test tomorrow and finish reviewing on Monday, the test will take place on Tuesday, October 9. The reason both honors and regular classes are taking the test in close proximity is because the honors classes covered more lessons than the regular students, and the regular students went through the material at a slower pace. As a result, the tests will look slightly different. My 7th grade class took their first test this week and then started a new unit "Shapes and Designs". Excellent job on the test! I am very pleased with the results. Some of you still had some gaps as was indicated in the letter I sent home. Please review the letters with your parents and then plan a retake test if you need to improve your score. Have a great weekend! MathXL and Math Munch

Each node represents a person. An edge joins two nodes if and only if those two people are friends. Here is a graph showing a group of friends. Can you work out who's who using the clues below? Extra Challenge: Here is a second network of friends.
